In windows 8 selecting "optimize" defrags spinning drives and trims SSDs. I understand win7 works the same way.

You might check out OWC since their SSD drives do not need external Trim.

With An OWC SSD, There’s No Need For TRIM

First, we should note that support for TRIM is based on the operating system and the SSD manufacturer. Microsoft Windows began to natively support the TRIM command for SSDs in Windows 7. Apple added TRIM support in 10.6.8, however Apple does not natively support TRIM on non-Apple SSDs. There is a way to hack the Mac OS to support TRIM on non-Apple SSDs, and we will get into that later on. But before we go further into what TRIM is and why you do not need to be concerned about enabling it on your OWC SSD, let’s take a closer look at some SSD basics.

Yes in principle. But what any drive supports depends on that drive. And details (before you even get to TRIM) matter as M.2 drive performance/technology vary hugely, it's just a card format that support multiple possible actual interfaces from slow old SATA up to 4 x PCIe 3.0 lanes.

The latest M.2 3 x PCIe 3.0 MVMe drives like the Samsung 950 Pro have just stunning performance and only a few hundred dollars.

What exact drive are you asking about in what exact computer?

Ever since 10.10.4, Mac OS natively supports trim on third party drives.
