Default LCD Monitor Options

It time to upgrade my monitors. . . presently using 2 x 21" Trinitron CRTs on my G4-Dual-1.42. . . I would like more width for my edit window and the 21" CRTs are very heavy when I go off-site. It looks like the Dell 24" Wide Screen monitor would be a great option. Anyone running these on a G4 PowerMac? Any compatibility issues? Any other monitors options I should consider instead? Thanks. . .

Well, aside from Apple's offerings, I'd recommend you look at Hewlett Packard's. Their 22" (or is it 23"?) is pretty darn good, and good value for the money. A client of mine purchased two of them, after I alerted him of their release, saving $1,000.- compared to the Apple solution.

Furthermore...

The purchase was made directly from HP. It turns out that one of the two 22" had a flaw. A phone call to HP and a brand new monitor was at his studio's door the very next morning. That's what I call customer service. (That was some eight months ago - no problems since then.)

Dell has their 24" Wide Aspect on for $999 right now while the HP 23" is currently $1,399. Both are 1920 x 1200. Dell has a better contrast spec.

Anyone running the 24" Dell on a G4?

Any other suggestions?

I just got mine today, from Ebay.
Awesome image quality at 1600x1200
or 1920x1200 , looks great with Pro Tools,
and no fan noise, unlike my last Sony LCD monitor.

The only issue with OSX is that if you do "Detect Displays" in the display control panel,
OSX thinks that a DELL 2405FPW is a low-res monitor and restricts your resolution choices
to almost nothing. There may be some way to trick it
(delete preferences?) but I plugged my old monitor back in to reset the Display control panel.

G4 MDD dual 1G, OS 10.3.8, standard GeForce4 display card.

The Dell 2405 is $999 and it has many different input types, which makes it more versatile. . . anyone done a side-by-side comparision?

Hi Howard,

I just ordered one because it works with my KVM switch so I can use it with a pc and my mac. I will have it installed in a couple of weeks in my new facility. A friend has it and LOVES it.

A KVM is a good idea. . .

I wonder if I can get part of the same functionality using the Dell 24" without the KVM. . .I have a Mac and PC now sharing a 21" CRT Monitor and the monitor itself has 2 VGA inputs and a switch. . . I see the Dell has a DVI and VGA input. . . I know nothing of the DVI standards. . . so I wonder if the DVI input is Mac G4 (MDD) compatiable? or do we have to go analog VGA with the 15pin d sub? I would be great to plug my PC into the 15 Pin D-Sub and the Mac into the DVI input and just use a switch on the monitor to change between computer video. . . comments?
