Default Waves L1 replacement?

Is there another plug-in for TDM that does what the L1 does, in a mono format? This is very important.

Do you have the Renaissance Compressor?

Or are you looking for a non-Waves solution?

Yes, I'm looking for a non-Waves solution. The L2 is stereo only!

I use the L1 in mono all the time but I'm becoming appalled by Waves as a company and their upgrade policies and was thinking of getting rid of their stuff (maybe keeping the RenMaxx bundle).

The problem is the more I think about it, the more I'm dependent on the L1 and ditching my Gold Bundle is a big mistake. As for Maxim, I want to stay at least on par quality-wise with the L1. I've spent some time with Maxim and It didn't work as well for me.

You would think McDSP or somebody would do a brickwall limiter.

I guess I'm keeping it...

Rail, yeah for some reason all of iZotope's stuff is PC only, which is unfortunate for them and us.

Dan, I hear you loud and clear.

I asked you about the Renaissance Compressor because you may be able to use it for level maximization and peak limiting. And of course it works in mono.

You probably know that the RC has an L1 style peak limiter on it's output. My experience is that this brick wall limiter in engaged when the Gain is set to +10dB or more. (I have confirmed this with Waves TS.)

I do post work. I also master some of the shows for replication. I want to preserve as much of the dynamic range as possible, while still delivering a disk that plays at an appropriate level. The RC allows me to do this beautifully. It swallows down everything I feed it, without drawing attention to itself. And it's easy to use.

Perhaps you'd like to try the RC settings I use on my Master fader. I'd be interested to know if this works for you.

ARC / Opto / Warm

Threshold -4dB / Attack 4.00 / Release 402 / Ratio 4.04 / Gain +14

I run my levels across the mix bus fairly conservatively. So adjust your Gain as needed. As long as you have it set to +10dB or more, you'll create a brick wall beyond which no peak will cross.

You may find this will eliminate your need for the L1. Meaning the RenMaxx Bundle might be all you need.

When I upgraded to PTHD, I received Maxim in the plug-in bundle. I had been using an older version of the RC (OS9, ADB dongle with iMate). I was hoping Maxim would replace the RC, so I wouldn't have to upgrade it.

After working with Maxim - how do I put this charitably. After working with Maxim, I stopped working with Maxim. I'll leave it at that.

So I'll be upgrading my Waves bundle. Naturally I'll pass on WUP-ASS. No point in bending over twice.

Thanks for the info on RC and all your replies. I didn't know it had a limiter for some reason. I'll give it a try.

Read up on the RC manual. It's true; any output over 0dBFS gets limited in the L1 style. You can't adjust the output ceiling, which I use a lot, but that's okay. Going to try it next time.
