Is this actually a thing? Floating windows must be one of the most simplest things to code. Has anyone found a solution for this for PT11, Windows 7 / 8?

Nope. Avid will have to recode this sometime.

I'm used to it and stretch my main window over both monitors then use Alt+Tab to cycle through applications.

I could deal with having to stretch the main window across my two monitors, if they were both the same size. I have 15' laptop with two 24' monitors either side. I Have a bit of trouble adjusting it, and I have to do it every time I boot up pro tools because the settings don't save. Yet another thing to add to the 'Pro Tools is lame' list.

Have you tried closing PT using the Alt+F4 command? That should cause PT to open with the same settings as you closed it.

Quite frankly it was a major screw-up for Avid to not take care of this as part of the PT 11 rewrite, assuming it could be done.

However, it is possible that in order to implement some other features, Avid simply could not code for the floating windows on the Windows platform...

I do not work for Avid (their loss)...my only relationship with Avid is that of a customer (when I'm not too poor to buy stuff, like now)...and that hot administrative assistant...that's more of a "thing" than a "relationship" (that should keep them guessing for a while...)

Just rockin'...what more is there?

From what I understand this feature was added around v5. Earlier versions of PT on Windows didnt have this behavior. Or so I've been told. I think the first version of PT on Windows something like 4.2.x.

I'm suprised they didn't do something in PT 7-8 which is around the time they started messsing with code underlying the GUI. But that was fairly invasive and there where some serious bugs to fix.

But yeah it's kind of overdue. Maybe they are saving that for PT 12 along with bins.

Which is why I have 2 identical monitors. Would be a nice feature though. I have a similar problem using a MacBook Pro and a different sized monitor, but most of my work is done on pc. Not a show stopper by any means.

Yeah, identical size monitors is generally an optimal setup too, and I have that setup with my desktop, but I work a lot on my Tohsiba, as it's quieter and uses less power.

This has still got me scratching a hole in my head. How, at this stage of development, is the feature of floating windows STILL yet to be implemented. This isn't some fancy, pointless feature, and I would've thought it'd be high up on AVIDs 'to code' list. They must of dug it into a hole with a lot of quick fixes,,,,

I'd like to agree with Bill Denton, in that the implementation of new INCREDIBLE features like Oflline Bouncing (OMFG!), formed impenetrable barriers of cryptic binary around the possibility of floating windows. Can only hope that it comes with PT12 and upgrades from 11 are cheap.
