Default Fixing distorted sound

I'm mixing an indie film where the sound was so poorly recorded. Basically, it peaks-distorts ( recorded level was way too hot ) in many places. Is there a plug-in or something to ease off the crakling resulted from the distortion. I have the Waves and Waves arts restoration but it does not help at all. Thanks

iZotope's new RX suite has a declipper module. Doubt it's capable of miracles, but it might help a bit. Otherwise it's welcome to ADR city - population: you.

Good luck!

I always found the Sony Oxford DeClicker helped cleanup distortion and works better than the waves one overall. However they don't make it any more- its now Sonnox who bought them out and not sure if they make the restoration plugins. The SonicNonoise stuff would probably work better than the Waves also.

I´ve fixed a huge amount of completely distorted sound on my current project using RX. It´s great. It worked great even on analogue distorted pianos and other instruments even when the digital level was was below full scale and the distortion came from an analogue gain-stage before the A/D. I have no idea how they do it but it works great.
Try the demo on your speciffig problem to see if it works. IMO the de-clipper alone is worth the money. It´s actually the first de-clipper I tried that actually worked.

Frank.

Cedar declip module. It DOES work miracles.

If you don't want to invest in the Cambridge system or plug-in suite, you can send your files to Cedar for processing.

I had the same distortion problem in a low budget indie film. I sent it to Cedar for restoration. (Apparently they like getting real world problems for test evaluation). The result was miraculous!! It was well worth it since I couldn't justify the expense of purchasing hardware for a low budget project.

i used Izotope RX works wonders. Was really surprised. Sonic NoNoise has a decent DeCrackle and have saved many recordings with it.

I agree with Frank. I have Sonic, Waves and RX and RX is the best as declipper. However, I have not found it effective repairing analog low-frequency distortion.

I post a monthly public affairs show and often get some very dodgy distorted audio - I have found the X-Crackle to come in quite handy and do a reasonable job of "un-distorting" the audio....I will have to check out some of these other recommended plugs though...
