No harm in upgrading.

When I ran my install(with SP2) the installer said I needed critical Windows updates so I went to microsoft and ran the updater (which updated the system to SP3) and then the install went fine and its been nearly perfect so far.

I applaud you for keeping your audio machine off the web. I do as well, but can attach a USB wifi adapter for simple downloads like the MS update. As soon as I finish, I disable the wifi and put the adapter away.

Pro Tools 8 does run with SP2 but the Critical Windows XP Update required for 7.4 and above is a component of the now SP3. However the required individual Windows XP Updaters for Pro Tools can be found here.

That brings back memories, chasing that thing down as I was installing 7.4 and bringing back to the studio computer.
