Default AAE Error -9178

Hello,

I finally got the new Protools 12.8 downloaded and installed (upgraded from 8.0.5), and upgraded to a new iLok3, but have encountered an error when starting Pro Tools. This error is generated when the plug-ins have finished loading. Once this error is shown, it will lock up and the software will not load. I am forced to open the Task Manager and force close Pro Tools.

AAE Error -9178
Assertion in "...SMgr_STConnectionPrep.cpp" line 152.

I have completely (I believe) uninstalled all software and drivers from PT M-Powered 8.0.5
- Uninstalled via the PT install wizard
- Uninstalled all Avid / PT / Digidesign software via Windows Program Manager
- Deleted all Avid, Pro Tools and Digidesign folders from Program Files and Program Files (x86), as well as in the Common Files folders

I have removed all plugins from the plug-in folder, restarted the laptop and still get the error.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Pro Tools and all Avid software, rebooted and still get the error.

I have drank gin, and the error is still there - but a little fuzzier.

Has anyone else gotten this error / specific details, and if so, any help?

Thanks,

Jim

Doing a quick Google search, it may be related to old Waves plugins. Check these out:

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the links. I had done several searches and seen most of those already, but I do not believe that my issue revolves around Waveshell, and I do not have any waves plugins. I did a search and do not have the waveshell file loaded anywhere on my computer.

I am running windows 10 on a laptop with an i7 processor, so it should be able to handle the software without issue.

I was hoping to avoid spending another $40 to open a ticket with Avid, but it looks like I will have to make yet another donation to their blood sucker fund.

With all the new ways they are making me spend more money and still not able to even open the software, I am starting to lose faith in Avid.

Thanks again for the help.

Solved -

It turned out to be a driver / hardware issue on this one. The one thing that I didn't try was UNINSTALLING my Fast Track Pro I/O drivers first, then reinstalling after. Looks like PT likes a clean install across the board.

I opened an Avid Support case and this is what we did:

I uninstalled my Fast Track Pro drivers and installed the ASIO4ALL sound driver.

ASIO4ALL 2.14 (or latest) - English Installer
http://asio4all.de/
(Link provided by Avid support)

I disconnected the FTPro and opened Pro Tools... Bingo! No errors.
(I didn't know that you could open Pro Tools without an external I/O device)

I closed out PT, reinstalled the FTPro drivers, rebooted, plugged back in and opened Pro Tools back up.... again no errors!

I did have to go into the Playback Engine setup and switch over to my I/O device, but I still have not had any more errors or issues. I put it to the test last night with an actual event and no issues at all using the Fast Track Pro.

One odd ball item I found... when PT opened, it was set to use the ASIO4ALL driver as the playback engine. While searching through the settings, I first went to the Hardware Setup and selected "Launch Setup App". The menu did offer the Fast Track Pro as an option in the WDM device list, but gave me an interesting popup window when I hovered the mouse over it. Here is a link to what I saw....

Computers hate you

Nice Easter egg someone hid in there....

Anyway, hope this helps someone else down the line.

Jim
