Default Silly Question

I've noticed that my ears seem to work better if I'm on the mix screen when tracking as opposed to the edit screen. I (and everybody else in the room) have been in the habit of watching the squiggly lines pop up on the screen as the vocals are being recorded. It's helpful for quickly locating punch in points but very distracting.

Which screen do you all usually have up when recording? It's not a serious question but I'm bored and felt like sharing.

Actually Dr. Paul Paylon, head of acoustics and electronic archival sciences at the Occoa Campus of Southern State University says that there is an actual deterrent effect on audio workstation users who make visual correlations with regard to music or audio recording (watching the waveform as recording takes place).

This has the result of the user "over anylizing" what is being recorded and "seeing" sound waves which aren't apparent to the listener..or don;t exist at all.

So watching the "squiggily lines" can diminish your hearing to the extent that you visual senses take over and use more brain power to process the visual as opposed to the aural stimuli.

Soon after Dr. Paylon wrote these words he choked on cube steak.

Damn cube steak..a senseless tragedy.
