Best CD burner options
Hi,
I am on an HD2 system. Just getting ready to upgrade to a new Mac. On my trusty old G4 400, I have been using a Glyph/Plextor tabletop scsi CDRW for backing up and burning audio CD's. It has a couple billion miles on it now and is beginning to screw up, not to mention the slow (4X) write speed. My question is... What would be the best modern replacement? What is everybody using? I need more speed for Data backup. I have used the plextor for a long time because it has been absolutely bulletproof. My new room has a seperate computer closet and I would like to have the burner in the control room. I'm not too knowledgeable on this subject, so you guys tell me.... Thanks again. Booker

Re: Best CD burner options
You can get a 40X firewire CD Burner for about $229.00 now. They work great.
I can burn 4 or 5 songs in about 30 seconds. Nice. No more bathroom breaks waiting for CD's to burn

Re: Best CD burner options
Burning at 40X is asking for trouble, even with a large cache. You will get more duplication jitter, not to mention bler errors. the resulting cd's will sound slightly edgy, and will be more prone o skipping on some players.
Get the new Yamaha F-1 burner, and use it's "advanced audio" mode for all critical audio. I have done blind testing on this vs two other burners, and the Yamaha cdr's definitely sound closer to the source audio. -really. BTW, the F-1 will burn at 44X if you want, but when you select "advanced" mode (which make the pits and lands a bit longer and thus easier to read) it analizes the blank cd installed and picks the optimum speed based upon a data-base created by their techs in Japan. With most media this is 4X speed. |

Speer, what CD software do you use, I am still stuck in Masterlist CD world, I would like to stay with SCSI, seems more reliable. But I am thinking about getting Waveburner Pro

Have you used the F1's "Disc Tatoo" feature to burn text/graphics onto a CD? Does it work well? Is it fast and painless? Does it compromise audio quality in any way? Thanks.

Re: Best CD burner options
I'm also curious about that Yamaha F1? Does it label and burn in the same pass? what is the maximum size of the "tatoo".

Re: Best CD burner options
Dutchmuzik,
You must use either the newest toast lite, or something called "Nero." both are bundled with the f-1. That's a point about MLCD. I rarely have to edit PQ codes, so toast works fine for me. Digi will probably not update MLCD's burner support for anothe 10-16 months, if past performance is any indication. i would imagine that Jam already supports the F-1, though i haven't bothered to get the latest version yet ------------- audiaudio. Dopamine, I haven't tried disc tattoo. It takes about 15 minutes per disc,(seperate pass) and also uses up quite a bit of real estate. definitely a cute trick for Mom and Pop, but no for pro use. |
