Is Avid shooting themselves in the foot with CC?
First, a bit of background. I'm a long-time Pro Tools user, and after letting my license expire last year (D'OH!!), I bit the bullet and paid the $300 to reinstate my Upgrade Plan last month, while they had the "Extra Year of Upgrades" promo going on. I upgraded my PT to 12.7, and I thought, finally, I'll be able to try out the Cloud Collaboration!
Well, I got onto the Artist Community and started looking around. It seems very slow there; not much user activity. Since the end of December, I have made a few connections there, and have even contributed a track to somebody's Project that I was invited to. This seems to be the forum to network with other musicians and media creators for collaboration- but considering the large base of Pro Tools users out there, the participation seems kinda thin! I have noticed a few shortcomings in the Artist Community site- it's not as easy to make connections as it should be. Seems to me that after a year or two of development, things should be further along than they are. Plus, as some have pointed out here on the DUC, the 1 GB of cloud storage is ridiculously small for audio or video projects; at 24-bit/48kHz, individual tracks' clips can be 100MB. That only allows 10 tracks in a Project. Do you guys think that Avid is dragging its feet with the development of the Artist Community and Cloud Collaboration? Are they shooting themselves in the foot by throwing up roadblocks to their customers' use of the feature? Seems to me that they are; Cloud Collaboration, I think, could be a huge selling point for Avid, and a major reason that people would want to use PT, if it was done correctly. --Doug https://ac.avid.com/artistcommunity/...s/DougBrunelle |

This is very important for post users as film companies are understandably paranoid about security and so this is the only way we are likely to use the collaboration features in the post community.”

Re: Is Avid shooting themselves in the foot with CC?
And why the limit of two collaborators on a Project? I think that even on a small Project, a limit of 10 collaborators would be more workable. If you're putting together a rhythm section track with five instruments, for example, wouldn't it be easier to have all five musicians as collaborators at the same time?

Yeah, I've seen you in the Artist Community. I was lucky to find 3 good people in there to work on a project. But you're right...not much is going on. Why? Well, for me it seems that the user surface is not friendly enough. It's a mess with not enough control. The fact that people like you and I can go in and create a new group is a nice idea, but hard to handle. I think Avid should provide some mor ressources to develop the user surface. Could be pools of instrumentalists, genres aso..... Another thing is the technical issues. They should increase the amount of cloud storage, and they should offer quicker and more efficient support. The Artist Chat Window should be reached without opening Pro Tools, and the text editor should be better. Generally Avid should improve their support branch. It shouldn't cost money, since we already paid for the product. They could also improve their e-mail dialogue box. I agree that this could revolutionize recording practice, and they could make huge money. I was lucky to find some guys who heaved my music to a higher level. The pool of great musicians is very large out there |
