Default Win7 x64 MBox 2 - I got it to work; Once upon a time...

So I used to run Protools 8.0 on Win XP x86 on an old computer, but due to the lack of processing power / memory, I decided to build a new computer with the idea of running Windows XP x64 and Protools 8.0. Built a computer using an Asus Evo mobo, and have 4gb DDR3 ram and AMD Callisto 3.2GHz dual core processor (which is now a quad because I unlocked the other two cores).

Then I realized that Win XP x64 was no longer a possibilty with driver compatibility on 8.0.3 with the MBox 2. I dont really care for vista, and saw there was a Pub Beta for Win7 x64, so I upgraded to Win7 64 bit.

Went through all the driver issues that everyone has mentioned here, updated to the public beta driver 8.0.4b, had the robotic sounds, so went back down to 8.0.3 by uninstalling the beta driver and just installing the normal 8.0.3 driver.

Protools isnt the only program I use. I'm going to school for recording, and I have Cubase 5, Ableton Live 8.1, Reason 4.0, FL Studio 9, and use WaveLab 6.0. The last time I reverted back to 8.0.3 I was able to acess the Digidesign ASIO driver on ALL of my 3rd party programs I just mentioned, and the driver worked GREAT in Protools as well.

Yesterday I started searching for ways to see if I could point default windows sounds to the Digidesign ASIO driver, and tried to see if I could "backdoor" install the DIGI MME Helper, and the Old WaveDriver (using the "install with windows xp settings")

Once I did that, however, none of my 3rd party programs recognize the device anymore, and I've done full uninstalls of protools and it's drivers, and reinstalls, trying to completely replicate the way I was originally successful with, and nothing.

That is my story.

Ok, so in desperation of a 3 week long problem (as I've been fiddling with this for about that long [when I got the new computer built is when this whole situation was brought to my attention]) after posting this thread, I uninstalled the digidesign audio driver 8.0.3 and installed the Digidesign Audio Driver 7.0 and guess what? Protools 8.0.3 works for me, and so does all my other programs! I think windows still won't recognize the MBox 2 as another usuable sound device, but at this point I'm just happy I can use my equipment again, as I was planning on using Ableton in about 10 days for a wedding...

That being said, I think I have my eyes on a Presonus FireBox... and I'll probably just keep the MBox 2 to work with protools, and use the firebox with everything else.

Yea strange right. I think thats your best option right now. For me, I was trying to get the mbox 2 mini to do windows sound too but had the same problem as you and reverted back to 8.0.3. Now at first the ASIO drivers didn't work for me until I disabled DEP and reinstall the update. After that all was fine. I had a TASCAM 144 and it had driver issues as well. They recently release an update which fixed everything, so now I'm using it for Windows sounds and my Radio system and use the mbox 2 mini for PT, Reaper and FL.
