Track & Region Color

can someone please help with a Pro TOOLS 8.0.1 color question:

In the Edit window - when selecting a track to change the track color and region color, I can change the TRACK AND REGION COLORS at the same time/in one step on SOME tracks but not others (in the others I have to open the color palette and select "track" and "region" separately to change colors...

Can someone explain why? Is there a way to ALWAYS be able to change the region color if I select just the track, and change the track color if I just select the region?
