I have the exact same problem. I was thinking that maybe I should have a separate HD drive for the audio files. As of now I only have one C:\ drive for System, Programs, and Files.
Is this the case with you???

The reason that Digidesign put those large buffer settings in PT Free is because cheap consumer soundcards, like the SB Live, just wouldn't work with smaller buffers in PT. That's just the way it is. You either have to live with the large buffer setting, or get a different soundcard.

My opinion... By the time you spend the money on a quality soundcard you're almost spending enough to just buy the AM III Toolbox or Digi 001 system with PTLE. Once you see PTLE you'll wonder why you ever bothered with PT Free at all.

I mean, PT Free is nice and all... But 8 tracks? Only stereo I/O limited to Windoze default sound device? Rediculous latency? Random crashes?

That's just my opinion though.
