002R, OS 10.3.9 and LE 6.9 unable to find hardware

I used 6.9 on my Mac 10.3.9 all day today, recorded about 3.6gb of audio fine. took a 4 hour break and when I fired up LE6.9 again it was "unable to find the device". I've powered everything down. check all the connections.

I have the 002 and a external drive on the same firewire port. if I go from computer to drive to 002 I can't see the 002 but the drive works fine. if I go from computer to 002 to drive I can't see either device.

Also, the units Mute button stays red and won't turn off. that's new to.

Does this sound like a hardware issue on the 002? Or can this be software?

P.S. - read something about doing a reset-all in the apple firmware by pressing option-cmd-O-F, however if that is something I need to try I think it will have to wait until I can find a normal keyboard, I can't get to that screen and I suspect it's because I have a bluetooth keyboard.
