Guys, many thanks for your reactions.

Mark: Jeroen ken ik niet persoonlijk. Ik ken hem wel van naam. Kennen wij elkaar?
Peter: Meta Sound is gefuseerd met RVM en is verder gegaan onder de naam CineMeta digital. Lokatie is nog steeds die van Meta Sound. www.cinemeta.nl

The Sound Devices Mix Pre is nice, great transparent limiter as well, no A/D converter though.

whatever you do, stay away form focusrite.
Their whole low end platinum range stuff is garbage. Thin sounding, noisy and no headroom.
So what do you think of the Focusrite ISA series? At the moment I'm thinking of replacing my Digi PRE, because of the 3dB steps in gain. You hear the ticks especially unusefull with actors... but the remotecontrol is pretty nice...

I'm watching for a ISA 428. Haven't heard it yet though...

I love the John Hardy M-1 mic pre. Has an LED for input. No stepped gain- so good for riding the gain during record, and obviously sounds very good. No A to D on it, but I'd rather go thru and outboard compressor like the 1176 before going A to D.

I would say: Ich verstehe nicht

From my experience I could say, that preamp for dialogs should be very transparent, clear with a good noise floor. No "warm, tube sound" is needed here. Personally, I find the Yamaha DM1000/02r96/DM2000 preamps really nice for such application, however it is not a very "portable" setup. If you have a signal chain which does not any coloration (both mic and preamp), the mixing process goes much easier, especially, if someone accidentally recorded dialog too close, and you need to add more distance to it...
I also find the SoundDevices preamps and converters really nice.

About the GoldChannel: this device appeared here somewhere in the early 1999 or so and we were under impression how it sounded; it is still in use sometimes, but we had problems with it;: both software and hardware, so I wouldn't recommend it as a device for mobile/shoot setup

regards,
Kuba

one route is getting a Manly Preamp, (VERY high quality, get the basic one with no compression or eq, so it will just be CLEAN transparent sound) and then an Apogee 200 to do your A/D.
can be costly, but Manlys are really high end/top notch and you can't beat Apagee's A/D abilities.

my 2 cents

Having almost all the top notch pre-amps out there,Neve,API,Manley etc, I'd go the desktop pre-amp, like a Martech MSS-10 that you can control the mic gain and line output very easily while in session.
They are extremely clean, Giant headroom, big anolge meter and amazing sounding.
You then go out to your AD/DA such as a Apogee and into your DAW, you'll never be disappointed.
