well, master.., the wheel has thirty spokes but it is the empty hub that makes it useful, a house has walls and a ceiling but it is the doors and windows that make it useful

it sounds (the stem story) like it makes sense but I'm clinging to any new info, branches, stems, flowerpots..? Sounds fairly metaphoric and believable but you guys and girls are a million years above me. I could make it work for me, I have that complicated sort of imagination. (not a simple one, eg.., took me three months to work out how to add this forum to my incoming mail via 'my favourites, so now I can stay in touch with this forum, cool ) eg.., Still haven't worked out the interface on the TV remote control

oddly enough, that link (according to my admittedly cursory glance) didn't even mention the fact that it is simply an abbreviation of the term STEreo Master!

Hope that makes more sense.

I found this post on mandy, but it has been deleted. This is what is left of the post though.

YOU MUST have experience mixing on Pro Tools as well as ... Your rate (if it's over $500 please take the train back to Crazy Town where you came from

There were some serious experience demands, I laughed and laughed. Ohhh, good times.

But I LIKE it here in "Crazy Town"! The audio post business is booming here! Rates are going thru the roof and I now get front credits on everything I do--including commercials!

Except that STEMS are rarely stereo. Usually they are in various layouts ( LCR, LCR, C, C or 5.1, blank, blank or whatever) in groups of 8 because of the Tascam MMR-8 digital dubbers. Since a lot of dub stages are recording into PT now this may change or just stay with tradition.

Sorry Carl, it is not derived from "Stereo Master". It is in fact used as the word is defined below.

stem–noun
-the stock or line of descent of a family; ancestry or pedigree.
-to arise or originate: This project stems from last week's lecture.
-A connecting or supporting part, especially:
-The main line of descent of a family.
verb.
stemmed, stem·ming, stems
To have or take origin or descent.

Well that certainly is news to me.

Guess I need to re-program the old Brain Stem.

You don't happen to know where I can get my hands on a Time-Machine do you? I know a lot of people who need re-educating & several publications that need pulping

Ta!

Yeah, I just always assumed it was a carried over term from the pre-surround days and the music biz.

Gotta stop taking things for granted I guess
