Default Updating a corrupted system from 2019.06 - what's stable for Catalina?

Hi Folks, need a bit of advice. My system has been running OS Sierra and I've just left it alone as it was working perfectly. I do VO work and now it's time to upgrade to a new install of Catalina.

Any recommendations on which PT's version to use next would be really helpful. Looking for a version that's proven to solid all round.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Jeff

Speaking for myself only, Protools 2020.12 seems to be the most stable version recently. 2021.3 is working for the most part but there are a few bugs identified that didn't exist before.

I assume you have a good reason to upgrade?
I think Catalina is the best, most stable version of mac os ever, but it won't run 32-bits apps you know. I hope you have considered that.

I have PT 2020.11, I see no reason to upgrade further yet, as it works very well.

Added: Are you prepared to do a full clean install of everything? That would be my recommendation. Best way to ensure stability w/PT.

Catalina is best for now, true that. BUT be sure to do a clean install, not upgrade. Or if you have your personal stuff on that computer first do upgrade and let OS upgrade your libraries but then make a good backup and clean install later.

Thanks for the advice guys! I have a few apps I use that cannot upgrade due to the older OS so I don't think that will be an issue.

Doing the install on the drive now without erasing first seems like a good idea. That might make it a lot easier to import email accounts etc.

Appreciate the advice. You guys rock!

If you have the room on your system drive I'd partition it and put the newer OSX on that partition. Even though it's not supported a few of us here are running PT 2021.3 on OSX 10.13.6 just fine.

Sounds like you're doing things the 'Apple Way' and putting the new OSX right over the top of the old one. While doable it's not the best way to do things.

I don't have enough room on the HD for this option. Thanks for posting.

Just consider making a backup of your user files and erasing the system drive, then re-installing the system from ground up without any kind of migration assistance. That is the only way to get a reliable working PT system, and if you contact Avid Support they expect this is what you have done. Upgrading OS is a bad idea, can cause any kind of random errors.

Thanks Janne, I'm doing exactly what you're describing. I think upgrading the system to Catalina first and then backing up that is a good path to follow as well. As mentioned earlier in this thread all the libraries etc will be updated. I'll wipe the drive after that and install a Catalina. I have a few plugins I'll need to upgrade as well, running into the dreaded "subscription" payment plans. I'll suss out some options to replace what I have. I'm using and Apollo Twin so I have UAD plugins available at a reasonable cost.
