Default Re: Major disappointment with Xeon E5-2670 system: please help

That datasheet is interesting, amiss?

I am familiar with the E5-2687W 8core - I owned it for at least a year or two (I got it for a song.)

Anyway.

The whole - Processor Socket R is somewhat confusing because that is a LGA2011 chip.

Infact that is why I went with my E5-2687W because it was the most powerful chip I could just drop into replace my i7-3930k which was also LGA2011.

Maybe they are trying to cover up the fact that these are consumer grade chips? (Especially at this point in time) idk. Whatever it is it seems very weird.

Default Major disappointment with Xeon E5-2670 system: please help

Same but different https://www.anandtech.com/show/7773/...not-compatible

Of course “professional” vs “consumer” is often marketing, but if you really need multi socket and ECC, then.. but often they are not the things to focus on.

But today I would be looking at single socket i9 or similar, and with that M.2 SSD that I keep mentioning. This is an old system, old architecture feel to it, with old CPUs, I hate to think what the OP paid for it..

I can answer the "paid for it" question: 400€ for the R920, 2x 145€ for the processor, 180€ for the RAM, 120€ for the graphic card. Built to order.
I have a working ProTools system on a Macbook Pro Retina, but it does not provide sufficient power for larger projects. That's why I was looking for an upgrade.
I would have loved to get a Mac, but I would have had to pay a multiple amount of money for comparable specs - at least, that's how it looked when planning the big machine. I talked to some studio pros, and they either have unaffordable high-prived Macs or deliberately went with Windows machines.

Still more than he should have for Sandy Bridge - chips.

I paid about that for my X99 / Broadwell Chip, Ram, Case, Mobo Ect.

Can you explain what is on what drive partition, were are VI samples installed? Where are session files put?

---

Fujitsu mangles OEM chipset IDs?... that's weird.

Pro Tools sits on VX 500, that is the boot drive.
Session files - for a start - sit on the Crucial. Planning to get them an extra drive. The Crucial is supposed to only hold the Photoshop files.
VI samples currently are not used in the project - for now, they sit on an USB3.0 small SSD (not attached at the moment).
The other drive(s) - Maxtor etc. - are only used for backup purposes and were attached to hold Installation files/Downloads and backups.

What do you mean with "mangle OEM chipset IDs"?

They label chips like "Fujitsu Siemens Core (Sandy Bridge-E) DMI2 100MHz"
and " Fujitsu Siemens Patsburg"... there is unlikely to be anything "Fujitsu" about those chips.
