Help needed - cannot upgrade 7.4 HD system to PT9 TDM?
Sorry if this has been asked, I just purchased a new MacPro (nehalem) with a PE6R4 chassis to run my older HD3 TDM system with three PCI-x cards onto.
The previous rig I had was only running 7.4 TDM with a 192 Interface, and I am trying to upgrade it to ProTools 9 TDM running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 It seems the Avid web site is only giving me the option to go to ProTools 10. Will doing this allow me to use the TDM hardware as I want to, or is there going to be a problem with that? Will the TDM hardware run with the regular 'ProTools 10', or only with the far more expensive 'Pro Tools 10HD' ?? This sucks if it's the only thing available, as it will force me to also upgrade my laptop which is currently running ProTools 9 and I am trying to maintain compatibility between the two machines so that I can continue working on projects from one to the other. (will PT9 read PT10 sessions?) Any advice appreciated, tried searching for this but no results that apply to my situation. |

Re: Help needed - cannot upgrade 7.4 HD system to PT9 TDM?
your best option is to try and find someone selling a 9HD licence w/o the hardware
from 10 you need to do a Save Session Copy In for 9 to open it to use you HD cards you need 10HD, plain 10 won't see the cards

Avid's point of view is either cough up $2,499 for the 'upgrade' and forcing me to do this because I am running a TDM system, or I'm out of luck? As a user I am finding the logic behind this somewhat difficult to understand... Out of curiosity, what was the cost of upgrading from 7.4 to 8 or to 9 (if you happen to remember)? |

HD7 to 8 was $250. HD8 to 9 was $350.

Re: Help needed - cannot upgrade 7.4 HD system to PT9 TDM?
I found someone selling the boxed HD9 upgrade, do you think it will bring me up from 7.4 or do I need to first find and purchase an HD8 upgrade? This is making me very queasy. Nowhere can I find documentation on this...
Thanks for an answer. |

PT9HD upgrade from what? if the upgrade is from PT8 then you'll need a PT8HD ilok auth for the upgrade. Chris

I am currently running an older HD3 TDM system with PT 7.4.1 TDM installed and authorized on my iLok. This was on a PPC G4 Mac, and I just purchased an 8-core nehalem box with PE6R4 chassis for my PCI cards. According to the compatibility grid, this configuration will not run 7.41, only 8.1 and above. (Obviously I could try and run the installer and see what happens as it seems that many people get away with doing non-standard things like this on unsupported hardware configurations, but this wasn't my first goal) The problem is that HD8 upgrade kits are impossible to find (only way I see them is to buy a used system with a core card along with it) because at that time the license was usually tied to hardware, which changed with HD9 once you could run it on any audio card. I have seen HD9 boxed upgrades for sale, I just need to know if they will only accept to upgrade from 8.xx or also allow it from 7.4.x (if I get it correctly, it's what they call 'surrendering the license') Someone replied that this was possible in another thread I was posting on. Would love confirmation. Thanks in advance. |

Re: Help needed - cannot upgrade 7.4 HD system to PT9 TDM?
I recently did an identical upgrade (7.4HD on a G4+chassis -> 9.0HD on 8core+chassis) The PT7 license is surrendered and replaced with the PT9HD. I skipped the PT8 upgrade. BTW- Don't forget to check all your plugins for updates and do a fresh OS install.
