Default Procontrol mixing w/ sound modules

Hi..I am new to this list and figured you all would be the best resource for me to tap.
I am contemplating buying a procontrol for a studio I am setting up for a producer friend of mine...He deals mainly with R&B and hip hop...we want to avoid tape and also try to keep everything in the digital domain as much as possible...now my long awaited question is:

How can I get all of the channels of my sound modules into Protools to mix them? I thought about setting up aux channels...but with like 20+ synth tracks I need alot of inputs...then I thought of the 1622 I/O...looks good...but I want to record @ 24bit...especially for vocals (we also work on jazz and pop songs)...that way I can dither on mastering...the 1622 only has a 20bit resolution...Will I even be able to run a 24bit session ....I don't mind the synths being 20bit...thats a whole lot better than I was getting before....i just don't want to spend $10,000 on 888's....I also want to avoid getting a D8B which can handle the inputs but I cannot handle the sound...I would rather use the pro control...

sorry for the long question...any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Take Care.

20+ synth tracks.

use

a) 1 X 1622 + 1 X 888/24
B) 2 X 1622 = 1 X Apogee Track2

If I were you I would get 2 x 1622's and an Apogee Trac2 which has a top quality mic pre amp and a 2 ch Pro Tools interface. This wi=ould give you stunning sounds intop Pro Tools and stunning monitoring 'out of' Pro Tools.

re: getting several 1622's bear in mind that you wuill be wanting to get into leaving all the synths - set up for good, patching and unplugging is a drag.

Jules is right, but I think this alternative is worthwile too: In addition to the 2 x 1622's consider getting an old 888/16 bit. The great thing about them is that they have 4 x aes/ebu out and nowwadays you can find them quite cheap. 1000 $ or even less. In adition to that, you can go for an apogee rossetta or a psx 100 to do the AD. Connect the apogee aes to the 888 and you still have 3 aes i/o's available for other outboard.

Hi Jon
So, why not just record the synth tracks into your Pro Tools system? I mean, you'll have to COMMIT to your sounds and performances, but I've found just having everything as audio tracks (at whatever bit depth you want) just makes things easier, and you're not dealing with the MIDI side of things anymore. Anyway, just my 2 cents

What about two Adat bridges, you will get 32 (24 bits) inputs AND outputs.

Well I am aware that eventually I will have to commit the sounds to a hard medium...but the issue is is that my friends studio does not have a regular mixing console in it. For pre-production it can be kind of cumbersome to have to load up protools and enable aux tracks...I guess I could set a template but I am looking for ease of use...being able to just opn it up and play the synths..sequencing will most likely be done in Logic platinum anyway... and back to the 24 bit issue...what will happen if I try to run a 24bit session with 1622's hooked up...will I get some weird bit rate disfunction or will it work smoothly?

You'll have to boot ProTools to run ProControl and your i/o.

No problem at all. It will work smoothly. Regardless of the bit rate of the A/D ProTools will record at 24bits. Even 16 bit 882s and 888s work perfectly.
