OT: Has anyone seen/fixed this type of distortion?
I was recording some audio into my laptop and I overmodulated the signal a handful of times. Instead of just lopping off the top of the waveform and and creating the normall "buzzy" digital distortion, I'm getting this horrible crackly distortion.
I took a look at the waveform and it seems that any peak that went over zero didn't just get cut off, but "looped over" to the lower swing of the wave form. It's hard to explain, but here's an image: http://www.morlando.com/images/distortion.jpg Has anyone encoutered this, and has anyone found any way to fix it (other than going in and redrawing each overmodulated peak). The algorithm to find and fix these errors seems like it should be pretty straightforward, but I'm no programmer. (I've tried some de-clickers without a minimal amount of success.) |

You zoom in around 6 times, and you get so close you can pencil the waveform.

Re: OT: Has anyone seen/fixed this type of distortion?
I just spent an hour penciling out a bunch of these things. It's not worth it. It'll take me days.
I guess I should pay more attention to where zero is. To answer the image question, I opened the file in an audio editor (Peak), zoomed in, and took screen grab. |

Re: OT: Has anyone seen/fixed this type of distortion?
If the same part exists in another place on the track, copy and paste over the clipped section. For instance, if chorus 1 is clipped but chorus 2 is clean-paste chorus 2 in place of chorus 1. Remember if you are recording 24 bit, you can leave yourself some headroom without a serious compromise in S/N ratio. I don't know if you can re-draw that much error, but you can try.
