Default Turn off

I thought I'd just pop into my home studio and put down a quick idea in Pro Tools. But I thought what I had to do to achieve this on the fly idea.

Unlock the door
Turn on the lights
Then the air con
Expansion chassis
Adat Bridge
amt8
DA 7 desk
Motor mix
DR 660
G4
WAIT
Turn on the speakers and headphone amp
Load up a session (template)
WAIT
Save it
Fire-up the Avalon
Set-up a mic
Tune the guitar

OK I didn't need to turn on the air con.

So I just picked up my hand held cassette recorder and it was done.

Gee what have I created, by the time you go through the above the idea is COLD. It wasn't like this with my very first 4 track recorder.

Use both maybe? Cassette for quick and dirty, PT for turning that into a major label release...
Heck, if it turns out to be magic on the the deck, just fly it in to PT.
Nick, we may be onto something.

My wife's a writer, and we have two studios in the house-ProTools for my editing projects, and MOTU for her music projects. When she gets the inspiration (like, at 2:00 AM maybe?) she grabs the minidisk and jots it down. Quality is great (if the performance can't possibly get any better....) and the ease of use is unbeatable. Use the right tool forthe job at hand!

piece of trivia...

it's actually BETTER to leave your gear on.
It'll last longer.
The rule of thumb is, if your going to use it within a 48 hour period leave it on. If not, turn it off. This applies to all electronic equipment.
What kills electronics the fastest is heat expansion/contraction of components and circuit boards, as well as, power on and power off hits. On the other hand... bad operating/layered product programming often leads to problems with software that can only be resolved with a clean power down and reboot. The other delima is that leaving equipment on all the time adds heat to your room and brings the monthly power bill up.

just can't win sometimes...

cheers

This used to be very true with tubes and such but less so with modern equipt. Computers don't function better if left on all the time and the startup surge is not what it used to be plus if your equipt. is on it is vulnerable to low power damage in brown outs ets (I live in California so it's an issue). On the other hand other that the mentioned power issue there realy isn't any reason not to leave it all on , ecept $$. But you could turn off most put the comp. in sleep mode and be half way there...

I feel for ya bro'!

I have a $35 micro-cassette recorder normally used to record classroom lectures, etc, that I keep handy all the time.

That way, I don't lose those fleeting, but great ideas. When I get the time, I go back and record them into a "proper" system.
