Default Upgrading Nightmare - TB3-TB2 & Desktop/Mobile

Hi guys,

Deciding to upgrade my setup. I am currently on 2014 MB Pro 15" 2.8ghz and was thinking either to go

a. Mac Mini route (the new one)
b. Get a used Trash Can
c. Go for the new macbook pro 2017/2018.

I mostly mix/master with my laptop but I realize that I don't need to be very mobile.

Right now, I am leaning for C (buy a used macbook pro) but I hate the fact that the only tb3-tb2 adapter is from Apple. I would love to get a dongle/dock that has EVERYTHING but mostly a tb3-tb2 conversion outside of usb for ilok, DAC, external hard disk, and mouse.

I would need the tb3-tb2 for UAD Satellite.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Or you could move to a PC based platform that has all the correct ports already, plus a better expansion and upgrade roadmap.

A “nightmare” oh no you poor thing

There are multiple Thunderbolt 3/2/1 adapters from a variety of vendors. Trivially findable by Google search. But the Apple Thunderbolt adapter is the way to go super reliable and widely used. These are not passive cables, they are sophisticated active electronic devices.

There are lots of good choices for Thunderbolt docks for anything else you need. The OWC dock has been great for me (I have two).

And when I travel I carry a pile of dongles, especially for different video formats for giving talks etc, but that actually gives me more flexibility than previous laptops I have owned.
