2014 macbook pro+midi+11rack..anyone using this combo?

Im using a 2014 MacBook pro 15" quad I7 2.8 with an 11 rack and trying. to get an M audio axiom pro controller to work but I can't get protools to see the controller..although when I play a chord it show the chord name on the edit screen but when I try to get it to work with boom or mini grand or any of the stock instruments the controller won't play any of them and protools goes into spinning beach ball..
Ive tried this with both Protools 12.8.3 and 2019.5 same result no worky with controller but can record through the 11 rack without the controller hooked up.
I can get the controller to work without the 11 rack..works with protools and live and logic . Are the Usb ports on this 2014 wonky?

this setup worked fine with my 2012 MacBook pro. I am using a usb hub which worked fine before

setup..2014 macbook pro On Sierra, 16 gigs ram..external usb drive, usb hub, internet disconnected, any ideas?
