not really, i've been using the laptop for almost 3 years and it works great for mobile recording. im able to get 18 tracks to the external firewire drive via 003 and a yamah 01v. ive gone 2 hours and 15 minutes straight with 18 tracks with this setup. the problem is with mixing these live shows yu have to edit the crap out of them and use tons of eq because theres bleed everywhere. so i just need something with more power for mixing on, preferably a mac so that i can transfer the files easily.
im starting to think if an old powermac g5 with some uad cards would work out better than a pc.

Leopard will not run on the PPC and based on Digi's recent announcement, neither will the next release of PTLE

but I bet they'll be cheap

First off... what are the specs of the Macbook you are running? Is it a MBP? Intel? RAM? etc...

Second... a G5 is hardly an upgrade, at this point. Speaking as a G5 user, I'm really not happy with the current performance, and I find myself having to switch sessions over to my Macbook Pro more and more lately. The problem is the processing. Single core is out, multi-core is in. Not only are they far more efficient, but most new software is being designed with multiple cores/cpus in mind. The G5 I'm running has a 1.8GHz with 6GB of ram, and it can barely handle a solid mix session without a lot of lag. I switch over the session to my 2.2GHz Core2Duo, 4GB RAM MBP, and it runs smooth as silk. G5s are cheap right now for good reason... they're outdated.

Finally... You mentioned you use a 003, and an 01V. That's at least $4-5,000 combined, if you bought them brand new... but you don't want to invest in a decent computer? Get a Mac Pro, rather than G5, you'll be MUCH happier, and a Mac Pro will last you at least a few years, whereas a G5 is going to be mostly obsolete within the next 6-12 months.

Digi is dropping support for the PPC - 8.0.1 is the last release, though we may get a couple CS updates for the most offensive bugs.

Look here: http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...4&itemid=39673

Even though the G5s run Leopard, you may want to reconsider any future with them.

Can you give an example of how much plugin activity you can use before your power gets low?

Very basic plugins running. A compressor on each track, maybe an EQ... in a typical session of about 20-30 tracks. Runs sloooow on the G5, while the exact session runs beautifully on the MPB. Can't even run more than one instance of Eleven without seizure. Just one instance of Ozone brings performance down significantly, even in a session with less than 10 tracks. Performance settings are maxed out in Pro Tools as well.
