Default firewire extender and 003

hi,
i´m planing to buy a digi 003, but i have my mac in a machine room which is too far for a normal firwire connection..
now i read that there are firewire extender, but the one i found (http://tinyurl.com/33kmgu) seems to cost at around 1000 euro, which is a bit much..
is there a cheaper solution?
anyone ever tried to connect the 003 to a computer with a firewire extender between? (is it running good?)

thanks for all answers!
all the best
evs

i guess it depends on how far away your machine room really is but I've heard stories of people running firewire 400 at 40 feet. I haven't tryed this myself though.

Hi, evs.
This is a reply by DUC member 'peppertree' to thread a few weeks ago.

That's why you get an active firewire repeater. I got mine from cablemegastore.com for $30 or so, since redco didn't have them. I run my 003 about 30 feet away from my Mac Pro with zero (0) problems.

I got big thick DVI extension cables from redco, but it might be cheaper to get long HDMI cables and DVI adapters...not sure if there would be a difference in transmission quality.

And redco has the active USB repeater to go alongside the firewire. That's all you need. No isoboxes, no "quiet" fans/drives, just a machine room (any other room that's isolated enough and ventilated enough) and a bit of routing to get four or five cables to and from without noise getting through. About $200 all told. No-brainer.
