Default PT newb system build

Hello DUC,

Which PT8LE release should I install so it just works right every time?

I've been using media composer for years but have yet to use PT. I've 2 boxes, 1x mac pro (2x harpertown), 1x windows (HP Z800), on which I want to co-install MC4 & PT8LE. I'm a big fan of RTFM so I've read lots of documentation. I've also read here about the 8.03 white noise problem.

Please feel free to add anything relevant.

Thanks,

/mp

Intel Q8xxx or higher,
4Gb RAM,
Windows XP with SP3 (no updates after SP3 raw installed),
PT 8.0.1cs1 - NOTHING ELSE.

Right now, ^--this version with this Windows is your best shot.

A follow on question about firewire cards. Digidesign qualified 3 firewire cards (2x SIIG & ADS). Avid also qualified 3 firewire cards (StarTech, Dynex, Point Grey). Naturally, there's no card on both approved lists. Also the 3 Avid approved cards don't use the Digidesign mandated Oxford chipsets. (StarTech| built with a native PCI Express chipset and does not use a PCI Express bridge chip; Dynex| not available; Point Grey| LSI Logic (Agere) FW643 PCI Express 1394b link/PHY chip).

What to do? Install one approved card from each list & copy audio files between drives when I need to massage MC audio tracks in PT? Surely there's a better solution. Will the mere presence of an unapproved card on the system bus cause MC or PT to crap out?

Thanks again,
/mp
