Pitch shift it down and slap a slight ring modulator on it?

I haven't tried it yet so I don't know what it's like, but for what its worth:)

You'll need a VST to RTAS wrapper for it.

Eventide. My Eventide 4000 has a genuine voice-disguising algorithm, and I imagine that the Eventide plug-ins have some version of it as well.

And yes, you can make something sound very scary with an Eventide.

Hello. Looks like it's your lucky day at Audio Midi dot com. They are selling Antares' Mutator for $10. Give that a shot.

reverse your voice clip then apply a long reverb to it, then reverse it again..
(I know it's old school but still popular)

Pitch shift the voice down (not too much). Then, apply the reverse reverb trick, keeping your printed reverb separate (record only the reverse wet signal). Pitch the reverb down a bit more. Bring everything back forward and mix up that satanic reverb to taste. Try treating the voice and its reverb differently. I find that creates unsettling effects very fast.

Seriously, I have an H3000B that I keep just for the "planet zorgon" patch.

Personally I think it sounds way more convincing (and terrifying) when it's the actual performance itself that imbues the feeling of menace.

I'd give you an example but it's stuck on the tip of my tongue, I'm sure I'm thinking of some 70's horror like The Exorcist or Don't Look Now - if I remember I will update.

The first couple of Evil Dead films make good use of this (as well as some fun extreme harmonizing to show both sides of the coin).

The most recent example that really sticks in my mind was I think done by having about 3 different types of performance stacked on top of each other and sweetened with a sub-harmonic generator or harmonizer or something.

And that example is the single word "Rise!" form the last of the Star Wars prequels, Revenge of the Sith.

Have a listen to that.
