Re: Drum Overheads
Technically the 3:1 rule applies to 2 mics recording 2 different sources, not a stereo configuration, though it may have merit in this situation too. I agree that you'd probably get a more spacious image if you spread the pzm's much further apart.

Re: Drum Overheads
It's for 2 mics recording the same source. In this case, the source is the drum kit, although you could easily argue that the kit counts as several individual sources.

Re: Drum Overheads
That's the common misconception, but the 3:1 rule applies to 2 mics on 2 sources, not a stereo configuration. The pzm's in the picture are basically a spaced pair, which are not phase-coherent.

Re: Drum Overheads
Just a hint for the Oktavashop - log in to see cheaper prices. Those shockmounts are 24,90 EUR when not logged in and 20,92 EUR when you log in. The MSP8 set is 789,01 EUR when not logged in but 663,03 once you log in. That's a significant amount.
I found this out when buying some swivel adapters and fig-8 capsules last year By the way, the MK-012 makes a fantastic vocal mic, believe it or not. Here's mine from a somewhat recent session. Cardioid capsule with an added swivel adapter, shockmount, and pop filter. http://i.imgur.com/j2riAuc.jpg Also, a tip for the stereo bars with these mics... To get XY pattern, one mic needs to be elevated above the other.. Raising one of the mics is easy if you just take two adapters (one 3/8-5/8 insert adapter, one 5/8 to 3/8 adapter) and put them together on one side of the stereo bar to form a riser. If that's the case, I've been walking around with that misconception for awhile. Oops. But it's okay, I break the rule all the time when it sounds good.
