Default LM100 oddity

hey folks-

my first time w/ the LM100 and i'm noticing something odd.
assuming i've got it set up correctly (i believe i do), the unit
is having a hard time "listening" to a male VO in my spot.

i'm doing a 5.1 :30 TV spot and for the moment i'm feeding
a mult of the center channel into the LM100. i've sent
it in via AES/EBU pair using a Canare converter and i've
also tried the analog input into the unit. in either case,
the female VO option (we haven't picked the final VO yet)
reads almost immediately on the unit, but the male
VO almost never reads. i have the unit set for "Infinite"
mode and "dialog intelligence" on (this is the spec
i was given to mix to).

all i can figure is the male VO is a very deep voice
and the unit is not reading it as dialog. the "no
dialog" message is displayed and the DialNorm
reading flashes constantly.

i can get it to "read" the male VO every once in a while
but this is scaring me.

anyone have any insight on this? i'm prepared for
the possibility i have it set up wrong, but since
it reads the female VO well, i think it's correctly
set up. i'd be willing to post an AIFF of the
center channel w/ either or both VOs if any
kind soul wants to see if i'm on crack.

thanks so much for the help/opinions,
marty.

The infinite mode is there to read levels over a long period of time. For something short try the "short" mode. Reset the unit before you play back and hold it in pause until you start playing. You should be able to get a good reading that way.

I don't want to sound stupid, but are you actually seeing db levels at all on the meter? Are you actually set to look at the correct channel?

cheers

Georgia-

i'm the only one who has to worry about sounding stupid i assure you.
yes, i'm reading levels, etc. on the meter. and yes, i'm sure it's
"hearing" the correct channel. as i said, it reads the female VO
very well..just something about the male's voice quality
isn't reading well on the meter? dunno. i'll keep messing
with it to see what's what.

thanks,
marty

thats an odd one.. I've never run into this type of problem. Can you Eq the Dialogue a touch to make it read better, then remove it for laybacks... Obviously the only issue with this is the level change, if any, when Eq'ing. I guess you could check the meters when you do the Eq and adjust so it's the same gain level...then run the Lm100 for dialogue norm level. Then lose the changes for printmaster.... ( ugh )

cheers
