audio dropping out during comping

Hey folks.
Every time that I promote a section of a playlist to the main track, I get a short interruption in audio.
Really kills the flow.
I'm running 2020.3 on High Sierra.
This used to happen a few years ago and it seems like it's back.

Strange, I just tested it and it plays smoothly on mine. Does it happen in a session with no plugins? Have you tried it using a different interface?
