Thank you all for your responses and advice. I really appreciate it.

I’ve heard there’s a “known problem” with HD cards developing problems over time with sessions over 48K. Have any of you heard about this?

I don't think it's been mentioned... with the HD cards, you should strongly consider including at least one Accel card- there are some nice accel-only plugins out there, and it also expands the track count of the mixer.

I'm thinking HD Core PCIe with two Accel cards. SSD system drive.

What is the latest version of PT10 you guys would run with this system?

Thanks again for everyone's patience with my questions.

Well I'm back and ready to build a HD3 PCIe system. Thinking I'll need:

192 - 8x8x8

HD Core and two Accel PCIe cards

Mac Pro 4.1 or greater, running Snow Leopard or Lion on SSD. Kinda hanging up on this. Will it pay off to get a higher powered box if I can run more RTAS plug ins? The Westmere boxes are still holding their value.

HD10 software - this is looking like a problem. I don't want a cracked copy or eBay cloned HDD. I've been looking around for a legal copy. If anyone has one they want to part with...

X-HD card for my Rosetta 800. Or should I use the X-Digi board in the Rosetta 800 and attach it to the legacy port on the 192?

Don’t discount HD 8. On Snow Leopard HD 8.1.1 is considered one of the most stable setups around and you can get a legit license on eBay for $100 or less. I actually got a PCIx Core card and HD 8 license code with a backup license from Alto Music years ago for $100. That system is now an HD6 in a Magma Chassis running 10.3.8 on Mountain Lion.
