Default Re: Question: Sierra or High Sierra for PTHD 2018.3?

i really believe sierra is the best overall compromise for OSX at present and what i recommend.. It basically still works with everything and is solid. El capitan was a major issue for me, yosmite was great but Avid cut support for it.

You can run sierra on any mac except the imac pro, which is the one thing holding me off from getting one.

I'd be interested to read more experiences or any issues with high sierra, but I can say unequivocally, that sierra is stable and PT is stable on it. Since 2018.1 i haven't had a single crash with that combo, honest.

While I never really had any problem with El Capitan, Sierra is perfect. I installed High Sierra last fall when it came out and while it did work, there were a couple of annoying issues. I reinstalled Sierra 2 months later and that's were I'll stay until High Sierra's performance is either the same or better than Sierra. That's still not the case even now that's we're alsmot at 10.13.4. Maybe I'll end up skipping HS entirely and wait for the next release, assuming of course that it won't be yet another "iOS extension", with more useless, pointless "features" nobody really needs...

Don't forget that the next OS release cuts absolutely all 32 bit support without exception.. so if you have ANY mac app you need to use that is not 64 bit, forget it.

I need my SCalc app (studio calculator) which works even on sierra and i got it in leopard days.

Whatever I do i absolutely have to make sure it is before HS successor is released..

Was there any grief downgrading from HS to Sierra? Like did the recovery partition just get automatically overwritten with the correct sierra one and everything just worked?

I am still thinking of getting a 2013 mac pro and downgrading it to sierra...

I am pretty sure PT should work with sierra for quite some time yet..

Default Re: Question: Sierra or High Sierra for PTHD 2018.3?

what exactly are the benefits of using HS over sierra aside from the faster copying of files?

I have a rMBP with the internal SSD but also wondering if HS would mess with my external SSD's that are Sata/USB3

lastly- anyone here have luck trying PT10 on Sierra or HS? (aside from graphical UI distorting... does it still work?)

shouldn't mess with externals as you are still allowed to format those as HFS+ if that's what you want to do.. main drive can't be though

I had to do a clean install so everything was in fact installed/created from scratch, nothing was overwritten. I didn't have TM backups or anything and to make sure I'd go back to HFS+ it had to be a clean install. The fun part was when Native Access couldn't figure Komplete Ultimate was already installed, so it took me 4 days to redownload and reinstall all the libraries, eventhough they were already there...

It's impossible, of course, to install Sierra let alone overwrite the recovery on top of High Sierra. I made a bootable USB installer and simply erased my disk. What's tricky is that you have to erase and reformat in HFS+ in High Sierra beforehand, because only the High Sierra disk utility allows you to delete an entire APFS container.

Having said that, you can actually force High Sierra to install on an HFS+ partition without converting it automatically, with a simple command line. I learned that later... With High Sierra my mac would take at least twice as much time to boot (thanks to an APFS/trim issue that only seems to affect 3rd-party SSDs), and apps would take quite a bit longer to launch (for instance, Pro Tools bounces 7-8 times in Sierra before I see the flash screen, in High Sierra it's more like 15 times). From what I've seen so far, nothing has changed in 10.13.3 or 10.13.4 (still beta).

When I finally had my system up and running with 10.12.6, I made myself the promise to NOT upgrade to High Sierra again unless there's an actual, noticeable, performance improvement over Sierra. Since PT 2018 seems pretty happy with Sierra, I don't see any real reason to upgrade for now.

I'm running PT HD 2018.1 with High Sierra on my cheese grater (2009) and it's extremely stable.
I formatted my system drive as HFS+, because it isn't an SSD, and I wanted to be compatible with drives delivered from third parties running earlier OS' (HFS+ drives should mount on an APFS system but I was just being safe).
No issues at all.

Also, to the previous poster who asked, I have PT10 running on my laptop with Sierra (10.12.6). Seems to work ok other than the graphic issues.

wow thanks for all the info..

can the HS recovery partition be completely erased so the entire disk can be made into an entirely fresh single partition? Or is the recovery hidden to all disk utility scenarios? Yosemite and under was very easy to do this.

HS and PTHD 2018.1 Running great so far on my system (see more below) and may even launch PT and individual sessions a bit faster
K Roche, You have same machine as me and seems you use PCIe Native card also. I don't know your PTHD2018 + High sierra is working with PTNative card. I got problem with Navtive card un-recognized. Please tell me your macpro card slot order or anytrick that you make it work.

Assuming you'd want to completely delete the APFS container (so you're back to HFS+), yes. Because you erase the drive entirely. The new recovery partition will be created upon Sierra installation.
