Default Question About Two Drives vs. Three (System, Audio, Samples).

Simple Question: Do I Absolutely Need Three Drives To Succesfully Run PT Sessions that USE AUDIO SAMPLES in Programs like KONTAKT from NI?

Background: Here trying to build a system (laptop) I can use at work on my lunch and administrative breaks to catch up on projects and do some recording. I have an SSD Express Card by MTron (16GB Though) for my laptop that claims to do 100 MB/s. It seems as it does. I've played back sessions with up to 32 tracks w/o a hiccup.

At home, I use Kontakt for samples, along with Hybrid and Pro-53 VIs for synth sounds. My home system uses 3 drives (System, Audio, Samples) without real issue (Asus P5K).

Will my laptop suffer because I'm only using two drives? (System/Audio). Would I better off placing the samples on the audio drive? (since it reads/writes 100MB/s), or would I be best off investing in an eSATA Express Card w/two ports to hook up two eSata drives? (which may in fact be much slower than the 100MB/s of the MTron SSD).

I know it is a lot of information, but thank you for answering if you can.

Thanks for chiming in KeyBeets. I know that MOST on here FROWN on using USB for audio samples. I have plenty of USB drives readily available. I guess its worth a try, but I know the results may not be to my liking. For now itwill be fine. Thanks for the suggestion. If you do it and it works, I'm sure I'll be fine with it too!

Yeah; Like I said, I just do a little bit of tracking & mostly run stem sessions with some VI's(ones I named along with Xpand-Mini Grand & a few plugs for Live performances but I've not ever had it hiccup on me tho...

Interestingly enough, after ALL updates on my Lenovo X200 Tablet Laptop which only has a Dual Core 1.86GHz processor w/4GB of RAM (3GB visible on XP32), the Laptop is able to run the EXACT same session using 900MB, which took nearly 2GB on my Quad Core to run. I wonder what gives? I'm running this session off of the SSD. I copied my samples to this SAME EXACT DRIVE, and PT is playing BOTH (the samples and audio) w/o a hiccup! Amazing!

Thought I should add that the VIs in Question are Kontakt 3.5 (w/9 different instruments loaded, some heavy such as Tenor Sax and August Forrester Grand), Mini Grand (for its Dance Piano), 8 Instances of Pro-53 (from NI) and two instances of Hybrid!

I guess I'm super lucky. Thanks! I can't recommend this SSD for laptops enough!

I'm messing a little session now on my laptop just for ideas as I type & move the type this & move around on the DUC... It only has a couple voc tracks, Hybrid, Mini Grand & 2 instantiates of Stylus.. Not much but it runs Flawlessly for the most part & this is on Vista... But again, I don't really get into real work on here...
