Default Idle Digi 001 running at 100% CPU usage in XP Task Manager Help

When the Pro Tools application is open the CPU usage in Windows Task Manager shows 100% how can I fix this problem. I can only get about 6 tracks on the DAVEC test. Please help.

Thanks

100% usage in the Task Manager is normal....6 tracks DaveC is not...

I am sorry i cant give some tips, but you have to tell a bit more about your system....

what mobo, processor, harddisks?
what applications are installed?
what OS are you running? (winXP i think because of the task-manager...)
other installed hardware?
irq-listing?

Make sure you disable your antivirus or PT will barely run.
Also make sure qttask (quicktime) isn't nunning in the background.
It's a system hog.

The system was lagging before I ever ran these programs.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">if you read one of the digidesign read me manuals, it'll explain that even when Pro Tools is idle, it'll show up as 100%, and that you shouldn't worry, coz that's 'normal.' the reason is coz task manager rates usage based on how often a program is "doing something," and since Pro Tools is always "doing something," it shows up as 100%. but again, it's normal, your computer isn't actually running at 100%.

Thanks for the input on the CPU usage, but does anyone have any suggestions on how to get 32 tracks on the DAVEC Instead of 6. Bastiaan where are you? Help.

Ajay

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Does that mean you still have them running?
I have an XP 1800 and get 32 + 2 aux's.
With antivirus running, I'm lucky to get a session open.

DMA enabled on your drives?
System sounds and "eye candy" disabled?

What programs are running behind 001?
Have you tried disabling your LAN while in PT?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I have done everything you stated above except for disabling the lan. I will give it a shot. The antivirus you are running is it Norton 2002 or something different. I tried getting more tracks before I ever loaded antivirus and it didn't make any difference.

Hi Ajay-
No, I'm not running Norton, E-trust by Computer Associates, which is by far much less intrusive than Norton or Mcafee. (I've had experience with all three. Mcafee is the worst. Like a boat anchor.)
Digidesign specifically reccomends disabling any antivirus (as well as other suggestions)in the 5.3.1 Addendum pdf, page 4.
Your IRQ's look OK... it seems to me you have some program choking your system.
Might also try replacing the VIA IDE controller drivers with generic M$ ones.
Sorry you're still having problems.
