Default external HD

what do you prefer? USB 2.0 or Firewire connection for an external audio HD?

Thanks in advance.

Make sure you get a combo USB2/FW, 7200RPM. Depending on your setup, and Digi hardware, you may get lousy performance with one or the other, but not both. This is the safe approach.

I purchased a lacie d2 250gb drive - it has USB2 & 1.1, firewire 400 and 800. Works brilliantly on both USB and f/w, but as I use an mbox which is USB, the f/w interface provides a better performance (using the USB with an MBox causes performance choking and stuttering).

I also use it to run PT sessions on my 001 system and video too.

Highly recommended.

Most drives that have both usb and firewire connectors rarely use the oxford chipset.

The Maxtor One Touch Combo uses the 911. Or so they say. Could this be the problem I'm having?

Maybe, none of the three one-touches I have use the oxford chipset...and they all give me troubles...I can't use any of them with PT...it's like the drives have some stupid energy saving features or something that you have absolutely no access to.

Thanks for the reply Chris. So I decided to check directly with Maxtor tech, and they confirmed that the One Touch combo drives do in fact have the oxford 911 chipset. As for the power saving thing, I'll have to do some investigating.

Firewire has a higher sustained throughput, making it a faster format than USB2.0 despite it's slightly higher transfer speed.

We use Firedock systems with IBM/Hitachi drives(8mb cache) that are very fast, efficient and super quiet.
