Default spdif-in of mbox doesn\'t work with core audio apps?

connected the optical out of my macbook pro to a behringer src 2496 for conversion. then went from the spdif out of
the behringer to the mbox spdif in. problem: somehow the spdif signal is lost when a core audio application (e.g. garage band) is started - mbox doesn't receive a spdif signal any more.
when using protools le the same routing is working just fine.

what maybe causes this problem: in audio midi setup only 2ch-32bit is selectable as audio input format. the behringer src is not capable of converting to 32bit.

any ideas?
