Default what is best mic to record percusion?

Hi,
thanks for taking the time to read and react to my question. here it is. I am using my 2 input mbox to record a whole percusion set. it has a dejembe, 3 gongas 2 bongos and various other percusion instruments. I have a few decent mics. I have 1 shure sm57, 2 mxl 603s, and 1 mxl v67. does anyone have a suggestion on which mic to use? should i record in stereo? how should i go about the mic placement? should I purchase a new mic?
I appreciate your time,
J

ya i have a mixer i always get worried that the initail mix through the mixer is not very good and once its recorded there is no adjusting the individual tracks. but its worth a shot.

Hey Fred,

I might be a bit slow here but.....Are you going to have several people play all of these instruments at once? Or are you going to track these yourself, one track at a time?

MXL as decent mics? MXL might be argued to be junk on this forum but I have 2 - 2001/603 pairs plus some other "real" mics. MXL gives a good bang for the buck. Perhaps the Behringer of mics.... I have used my pair of MXL 603s as drum overheads recording a Sonor kit with Paiste signature cymbals and the results were very pleasing. I had other mics on kick (D112) and snare (SM57) to round out the drum sound but overall the 603s faired well.

Drums with these two small diaphram mics may be tough. Cymbals will come through (too) great but the kick & toms may be weak if you are using a "down over the drummers" shoulders setup. I'd suggest aiming the 603s at the kit at about 3 or 4 feet high from just in front of the kit so you will pick up more drums and less cymbals. This the next config I am going to try on the kit mentioned. I'd like to hear your results. ([email protected])

Blessings! R
