Default Eye Need Your Help Cause I'm Losing My Mind.

Alright folks !

I'm literally losing it, PT 9 with mbox 3 pro Is not STABLE and crashes ALL The time.It makes a buzzing noise and freezes up my system.. to the point i literally cant sit down and work on a project with out the anxiety of thinking my systems gonna crash ..Heres a list of things ive tried.

Completely disabled all presentation aspects of the O.S (looks like win 98 up in here) Aero's Disabled.

Ive disabled my video card. Still no dice.

Done all of the optimization.

Went out and bought a new fire wire pci card and swicthed the slots so the IRC channel wasnt too busy .. that didnt work . Ive pretty much un installed all Plug ins and deleted them from the folders.

Switched to using 4 cores instead of 8 in pt preferences, That helped to the extent when protools crashed i can still move the mouse but thats it i eventually have to hardboot the system everytime.

Im literally losing my mind.. Any help will be greatly appreciated cause i have read and read and i have exhausted all options ( I think)

p.s My externals are both USB 3

SiSoftware Sandra

This might be a tough one. My build with an i5 and Asus P67 mobo was(is) a total bust with Pro Tools(makes a kickin' internet/office computer). Assuming this is a tower, I would at least try recording to the system drive(I know its not supported, but we are troubleshooting here). If you are able to run a modest session that way, and its better than before, then I would install another internal SATA drive for recording(WD Caviar Black are a great choice, but NOT blue or green versions).

You say you "went out and bought a new firewire card", but is it an APPROVED firewire card? The reason I ask is because neither FW controller on the Sandra shows as a TI chipset. Its also worth trying the other FW drivers that are available on your system(choosing Update Driver>Let me choose from a list). Avid recommends the Legacy driver(and I would try it) but that doesn't work on my 2 systems(here, the TI Compliant driver is the one that works).

It may also be worth trying the USB drives on USB2 ports if you can(its possible that the USB3 driver is not helping).

I agree with albee in suspecting your drives. The speculation online is that many My Books come with 5400 rpm drives.... some of them are "green" drives. Neither would be good for PT sessions.

Yes it is a tower PC, and you're right once I was running it and saving to the main drive it ran a little smoother but eventually crashed also. As for the fire wire card I habvent checked to see if it is Texas Instruments or not.. I will check on the asap and also I will try a few sessions with the fire wire in different slots to see if that will help change anything. I already have done the legacy driver change .. And it did help a little bit.. I'm starting to realize that there isn't one big fix but a bunch of little things you must do to have a successful working machine ( or I could buy a mac lol) hmm I will most def try the USB 2 slots I didn't even think of That , good call. So are you telling me you got your rig fixed and working with the texes instrument chip set? I am going to put my drives to the test tonight and start canceling out what the issues could be .. Thanks for the responses fellas . anything else you would like to share?

Sadly, that's not at all what I am saying. While the TI firewire card DID allow the computer and 003 to actually "talk", that machine as a whole is worthless for Pro Tools. I have had several successful builds, going back to AMD single core systems, and this build just whipped me. I hope you have a better outcome!

Hey, so quick question. So when u say machine do you mean strictly motherboard? or all of the components? Cause if that's the case couldn't I just swap the motherboard and keep the i7 the ram etc? Hmmm

The motherboard/chipset is certainly the single most important "make or break" component. All the i7's are good CPU's, but my personal judgement is the socket 1366 and 2011 are the best for Pro Tools. Socket 1155 and 1156(and their matching motherboards) are still somewhat of a crapshoot on whether they will work, and how well). I have yet to hear of a failed 1366 or 2011 build. I would take a peak at as many threads that show successful builds and take some notes on what mobo is proving solid with the 2600K as I remember reading about a few. As for the firewire, with the onboard FW of my ASUS mobo(VIA controller), the 003 would not be found at all(tried all 3 drivers). Adding an approved SIIG card solved that part, but PT performance was/is awful. The only way to work was at the 1024 buffer, which meant recording MUST use Low Latency Monitoring(which means no sends or plugins while recording). With my socket 1366 builds(1 listed below) I can work all day at 64 and record full bands, with custom headphone mixes and effects, EQ's and compressors running. I just avoid plugins with big latency(they are in the session, but are made inactive) and leave Delay Compensation off while tracking.

Thanks for your help man, I think I am going the x79 route. Seems like the most powerful / up to date build. Hopefully I can stop turning into a computer technician and just make music again.

I hear ya. I think its a left brain vs right brain thing. If you can get a little balance going, you'll be happy and constructive!

Default Re: Eye Need Your Help Cause I'm Losing My Mind.

So, in a very bizarre turn of events. I ended up trying a few more things to get my rig to work annnnnd I have been running amazingly smooth for the past 4 days. Well my definition of smooth is NO annoying pop upS every time I turn a knob, and no sketchy buzzing sounds when playing with a virtual instrument. NOW I have 8 virtual instruments all playing at once and I don't have any issues at all. Usually I would be bracing for a crash around the 3 and 4th instrument. Now not even a popup.

What I did was went into disk manager, figured out what IRQ # my mbox 3 pro was using. ( I ended up buying a separate PCI card for it) and I started going down the list disabling each PCI one by one until I found all the ones that were not being used to keep the system running and disabled them all. (Once I enabled the option in pt that optimized streaming from audio drives, my system had a intervention)

What tests should I run my system through to make sure it actually is a well functioning rig? I heard something about dverbs.. But yes there still is hope!!

And there might be hope still for those trying
