Default Taking ages to list mediafiles in finder...

I'm using AV 4.1v5, on OS 8, and am finding the finder's insistence in listing files alphabetically a huge pain when dealing with thousands of fades etc., although only 500 items can take a couple of minutes to sort on my 9600/300...any ideas?
