Default Protools Ultimate pre record

I'd. like to know how to set a pre-record time in pro tools, for example, I'm punching Measure 3 beat 1, but I want to have PT record say 2 beats before the punch iN point, so I don't lose pickup notes, or I need a little head to do a better x fade
I hope I made this clear, In Nuendo, I can set the amount of prerecording, before the actual punch point, I'd like to do the same in Pro Tools

Cheers

If you're in QuickPunch mode then Pro Tools is in "record" all the time regardless of where you actually make the punch - you can 'peel back' the newly recorded region to where you went into play and/or where you stopped regardless of where you actually punched in and out.

If you want to do auto-punches then pre/post roll times are set in the transport bar at the top of the edit screen or by dragging the pre/post roll markers in the timeline ruler or by option clicking anywhere on any track prior to or post the punch point.

When you activate "Quick Punch" in the options menu Pro Tools record from wherever you start playback. After the recording pass you can trim the audio clip back to where playback has started.

If in Quick Punch, Pro Tools is always recording.
So if you punch late you can just pull out the clip to find missed recording.

I'm not sure if this is still the case (I would need to test it), but even in QuickPunch mode, Pro Tools doesn't background record when in PreRoll, only during "actual" playback. So setting the cursor at the punch point and setting PreRoll to the amount of preroll you want won't do what you're looking for, even in QuickPunch. You will need to place the cursor at the preroll point, start playback without preroll, then punch at the punch point, to be able to trim your punch point back.

I don't think this is correct. In QuickPunch Pro Tools definitely *is* recording as soon as you go into play regardless of pre/post roll settings, and (with the possible exception of a buggy release somewhere along the way) has done so ever since Quickpunch became a thing.

You are absolutely correct. I just tested it, and in QuickPunch, Pro Tools definitely records during the preroll phase. This doesn't work if not in QuickPunch. I am fairly certain that there was a version, or series of versions, where this didn't work. But since I've been using Pro Tools since the free give away of version 3, I can't recall which version it might have been.

Thanks for calling this out, Rich, and getting me to go test and verify that it actually works!
