I think I get it now. The separate i/o path is required to obviate the need for solo-safing. Okay, this could be good. I suppose this is what is meant by AFL/PFL being "non-destructive".

No, you choose separate outputs for the dedicated AFL/PFL buss in the I/O setup window. This allows you to solo whatever you want and PT will send it out of this dedicated output. Without an ICON this does require you to do the switching yourself though and it does eat two voices.
