Hi Khoop,

Thanks for this post lots of great information. I’m looking into an eGPU for my Mac mini But my computer is in the room with me . How loud is the Razer Core X and video card?

1 TB SSD, 32 GB RAM (user installed)

2 Thunderbolt busses:

- TB buss 1: eGPU (Razer Core X with Sapphire Vega 64)
- TB buss 2: OWC Thunderbay 4 --> Sonnet Echo Express Pro (TB1) Avid HDX + UAD Octo ---> Highpoint 2 bay drive dock

2x4k monitor connected to Vega 64
1 small 1024x768 connected to MacMini

MacMini USB port1 --> Monoprice USB 2.0 extension able --> USB 2.0 hub --> 2 x USB keyboard + mice, 4xUSB midi interface
MacMini USB port2 --> USB 3.0 hub (iLok / eLicenser)

MacMini USB-C ---> usb 3.1 hub (external SSD drives)

ProTools 2018.10 Ultimate
UAD
Logic Pro

I highly recommend the 1TB SSD. You can always add SSD drives, but since you cannot change them, good to have a bigger drive for system.

I use my MacMini for sound designing tv-series. There's a 4K main monitor and a full hd screen for videoplayback. No HDX, audio through an Apogee Duet. The internal Intel UHD graphics gets very hot when working with Video Engine enabled (video resolution 1920, Apple ProRes Proxy) so the fans of the macmini are always spinning and making a lot of noise. Not so happy with this, since my MacMini is in front of me of the desk. I hoped the BlackMagic eGPU should have solved this.

I've got the BlackMagic eGPU 580 two weeks ago and its great. The temperature is now 10 to 15 degrees celsius less.
But its bigger than the MacMini and even bigger than my Genelecs 8020 speakers.
I think the video engine is still poorly programmed: when I hit play, even this eGPU is running at 100%! But it's doesn't get hot, so no fan noise...

Just found this thread so glad this was explored in depth!

I'm reviving in hopes that someone here who's got the Sonnet eGFX 550 has tried playback and the lowest buffer setting and if so, can tell me if they've seen any issues? I have this chassis with a Sapphire 5600 XT card and at low buffers the system craps out with a 9073 error when I move the mouse (it's almost immediate - like BAM... full stop). It's clearly related to the eGPU because it doesn't happen when it's disconnected and using the integrated graphics.

I'm having a hard time convincing Sonnet or Avid that this issue is worth their time unfortunately. I'm about to order a Razer Core X just to see if it makes any difference!
