Default Punch In Recording Guitar Track

I want to repair a few guitar tracks I've recorded. I know you can use punch-in recording to do it, but I obviously don't have a free hand available to hit "record" while I'm playing along with the track. Is there a way to have the recording automatically start and finish at specific bars/beats. Thank you!

Preroll.... postroll. Look them up in the Pro Tools Reference Guide or Google search for numerous demos etc.

Because re-recording is not a destructive process anymore, I generally just play the whole take again. Even if I just use a small section, it usually sounds more natural because it's played "in context". You don't have to worry about exact punch points... You can edit the two takes together later.

And when you do use pre/post roll it is actually recording everything in the pre-post roll so you can dick around with the actual punch in/out points later. Good tutorials will explain that.

Hi 7headed,

Go watch these quick videos below about multiple track comping. This is one of Pro Tools greatest strengths. The first video gives a very high level understanding; the second gives you a way to keep on loop recording multiple takes and then how to use them to edit your main track. Remember to set your pre and post roll to help with this as Darryl said.

Only if you're in "Quick Punch" mode (it records any record armed track, whenever the transport is rolling, even just playback, but the file gets dumped if you don't actually hit record before you stop the transport).

Regular record mode does not do that.

Good advice above, and don't forget loop recording with playlists

I play guitar too but what I do is this, I set the transport set to dynamic transport. The record button on the transport should be set to punch. Now select the area you want to drop the recording in. A slight overlap is a good idea so you can crossfade. Now just hit the rewind button on your numerical keyboard, number 1,back a few bars before the selection. Hit record and play. It will start recording when the selection starts. The transport will stop and you can crossfade. I like to do complete tracks over too. If I make a mistake, I don't stop the transport, I press command and . (period) on the mac. It's control . on the pc. This will completely destroy the recording you just made and you can start over without any files hanging around. The drawback is that it's a destructive option and you will have to re record.
