here's a picture of the fan. maybe someone with experience can let us know if there is a quieter alternative to this cofan blower.

- Extensive thermal scanning of the board(s) under use has proven they come on unnecessarily and prematurely.
- The fan choice is not well done, those particular units are very noisy.

what do you think about the idea of placing a resistor in series with the fan to bring down the voltage and speed?

Curious if any new information has been made available when adding a second HDX card to a Mac Pro 5,1. I've got a single HDX card in my system and it stays very quiet. I have 4 hard drives in the internal drive bays. One person mentioned reducing to two drives helped the noise with an HDX2 setup. I'd be willing to do that if it makes a difference.

Thanks,
Mark

Did anybody have any joy with an equivalent fan?

i once contacted cofan. they have similar models spinning with lower rpm. but they only sell bulk, so you'd have to buy 100 fans... anyway, my mac is in a silent rack now

Oh I see, I didn't think their online presence was very casual consumer friendly.

Anyone know if there is a Euro equivalent that might fit? I don't know if you heard the audio sample linked in the other thread but my fan is fvkkd.

Cheers

Paul

Edwin, just curious: which silent rack did you end up with? Might go this route if it maintains proper temperatures. Thanks!

Thanks. Yes I've since been in contact with them and it's 100 dollar minimum order, so 10 fans. That's not too bad. It's the only one they make but a resistor would slow it down apparently.....

+1 on the silent rack info please?

Sound construction is the only silent rack that works well.

I am once again considering HDX for a project studio... but I hate fan noise.

This fan noise issue seems so bad for some and then not for others. Some say it comes on with any session - some say it comes on only with a large session. If it was reasonably quiet in a Sonnett chassis I could have it in my mix room which sits at ~34dBA today. If its loud that just won't work and will take an expensive optical TB cable at the very least.

Since I can't return a new HDX system (software in particular) how can I make an intelligent choice about the "potential" noise problem?
