Default Pro Tools 10HD and 5.1

Can anyone help me? I'm trying to setup a 5.1 system using pro tools 10HD for the first timne. I've used PT for many years with a stereo setup. Went to create a new session and there are no surround options. Checked help and it said a surround mixer plug in would be in my unused plug ins folder. It wasn't there. Do I have to install any additional content?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If it's not in the Used Plugins then maybe it's in the Plugins Folder?

If not, then just reinstall PT. Once you've reinstalled, make a session using one of Avid's pre made I/O setups.

There should be 4 different mixer plugins:

- Stereo Mixer
- Dithered Stereo Mixer
- Surround Mixer
- Dithered Surround Mixer

I have not tried what happens if you have all of them in the plugins folder, I bet you should only have one or two of them installed (stereo and/or surround, dithered or normal).

Guys, what are these mixer plugins for? I've been messing with surround sessions and wasn't even aware of them. From what I understand, it order to access surround tracks, you just have to make sure your I/O is set up for surround before these tracks will be made available.

These plugins do the actual summing. If you do not have one of the Surround Mixer plugs in your folder, you can't mix in surround.

Of course PT's default install puts them there so you've never needed to mess with them.

In the prehistoric times of TDM, processing power had to be spared weherever possible. So if it s not necessary to mix in surround, then mix in stereo. If it is not necessary to use a dithered (high resolution) mixer, then don't. If it not necessary to use 7-band eq, then use a 3-band or a 1-band eq... You get the picture.

Just take a look, you should see four mixer plugins there.

Many thanks folks! The last time I installed PT fresh was in 2007 when Accel systems were the thing. I chose not to install the surround mixers at that time. In the end I was due to update PT and it was a fresh install. So anyone else having the same problems, uninstall PT and install the latest version.
