Default need external Fire WIre drive

the compato docs says:

If only one FirWire port is available, connect the drives to the CPU, then connect the Digi 002 to the drives

so, I have to buy an external harddrive for my laptop, connect it to my only fire wire connection, and then connect the 002r to the external harddrive???

I rather have another fire wire port to my laptop, though the compato doc says:

CardBus/PCMCIA FireWire/1394 cards for laptops

anyone having a solution for me??
