for me it's not even close.
i'm using 4 80gig firewire drives.
my sessions vary from 20tracks to 60 tracks plus video running off of another firewire drive.
i use 1 drive at a time playing back all of these tracks. tons of edits/ tons of plugs. the smoothest pt has ever run.
did a drum session the other day, popped 8 tracks into record with about 8 other tracks in playback, not the slighest hitch.
i did some tests when i first got my firewire drives.
put 32 tracks into record(1 drive) and 32 tracks into play back(same drive) hit record; it took about a sec. for pt to engege then i ran down a 4min song. 32 in record/32 in playback.
NO PROBLEM... then took the same session and made and edit every 10 frames. across the 64 tracks...smooth....no problem.
sorry to rant hear but i must... i never had this kind of track count using scsi.
i have done this same test on my mix plus plus system and now my hd 2 system.
1 important thing i have found is to keep the firewire drives clean using disk warrior. i do this once a week. it takes about 2-3min. that's it.
use the oxford chipset/apple drivers(don't use 3rd party drivers,i tried and had allot of problems) and you should be good to go......
there i'm done.

Sounds good Zeeman. Would all FW drives work for PT or does it have to be a particular brand/model? Do you daisy chain them? Thanks

hey xymox,
as long as they use the oxford 911 chipset and you use the apple drivers you shoild be cool.
i usw owc elite drives. i know the western digital are also good drives.
and yep i daisy chain one right into the other from 1 firewire port and the other port i chain a firewire for my qt movies.
check out other world computing ( i don't have the link) the 80gig drive is $209.00
pretty sweet.
good luck

cmz

ps i have been using these drives for about 1 yr. now....

For me the absolute fastest is Fibre channel but it comes at a huge price.

Firewire is cool-at 48/44.1. But what happens at 88.2/96? Anyone recording on HD w/Firewire, and with what result?

Zeeman--Your explanation is Much appreiciated...

I was ready to go get 2 10,000 75 GB SCSI's...$$$

The Apple drivers come with the OS9...just initialize with apple drive setup???

Can you recommend a web site for online purchase at the price you suggested?? for the OWC elite?

What is the Oxford Chip Set?? the case that holds the drives?

Can you have the chip set and drives made up and ready to plug and play, or do you have to order seperately and put it together yourself??

Thanx in advance...

i'm not sure if drive setup see's the firewire drives. i just highlight the drives and go to erase in the menu bar. i belive it does the same thing as drive setup( i could be wrong) but they do come out as apple extened drives when i'm done.
i really don't know the tech end of what the oxford chipset is, i just know that the one firewire drive that i have that doesn't use the chipset will not play audio.
when you buy the owc drives they are ready to go. they will mount on your desktop. then just highlight and erase and your ready to go.
use the drivers that come with os 9.2.2 and get rid of any other 3rd party drivers you may have in your system.
owc homepage

hope this helps.

hey todd,
i took a 2 mix of a 4min song copied it to 5 stereo tracks(12mono) then put 12more mono tracks in record: 12 in record 12 in playback at 96K. hit record, it took a little longer to go into record(maybe 2-3sec) and the whole thing played down for 4min.
i then took the whole mess i just created and made an edit every 10frames in all 24 tracks, hit play and the whole mess played down perfectly. i haven't done 192 test yet, but i will over the weekend and post my results.
remember this is a 2 mix that i am testing with, so all tracks are playing back at the same time. a little different then a reg. mix where parts are coming in and out.
just remember to keep up the maint. on these drives. i notice i can go longer without maint. on a scsi drive than on a firewire.
hope this helps
i'm done.
