Default Protools 9 working with Windows 7 64-bit

A colleague of mine says that he has ProTools 9 working extremely well on his laptop with Windows 7 64-bit installed.

It is important that I can run more than 3.5 GB of RAM with my PT sessions so I am keen to update to the 64-bit system.

Anyone else found it compatible?

Thanks,

System Requirements

Pro Tools 9 is still a 32-bit application, though.

I can tell you that going from XP with 8.0.4 to Win7 x64 with 8.0.4 on the exact same system saw a major boost in performance. If your computer is compatible, Win7 x64 is absolutely the way to go, regardless of PT still being a 32 bit app.

Talking Re: Protools 9 working with Windows 7 64-bit

I'll be the first to admit that my session requirements are NOT to launch missles.

That said I put together a Win 7 64/PT 9 system for $837 INCLUDING the PT9 SW Crossgrade from M-Powered. I moved from 7.3.

I picked up a new Dell SC430 Server with a Dual Core 3.2ghz processor and slapped in two 500GB drives, 4GB Ram, a 512MB PCI-X video card, my Delta 66 card and a DVD drive. It has 6 USB ports. I already had two 19" Viewsonic monitors; one set for Edit and the other set for Mix and a Delta 66.

Cost: $245

PT Crossgrade: $296 (GC Pezidents Day sale had a 15% discount)

Win 7 Pro: $98 (Installed 64Bit)

Pod Farm 2: $49

Hybrid and Strike Upgrades: $148

Now my requirements are in no way near what I see many folks use/need here but for a Guitar player that lays down their tracks with a solid drum plugin, synths for everything including Bass Guitar it ain't bad.

Just for grins I layed down 15 guitar parts over the last few days using Pod Farm 2 as an external app and as a plugin, Strike, Hybrid, Xpand2 and Structure tracks for synths and Bass. I then went back and recorded a few doubling guitar tracks with Eleven LE.

Not a hiccup to be heard. PT 9 is SOLID on this relatively mediocre rig and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg to get there.

My point is you DON'T have to blow a huge wad of cash to get reasonable productivity with PT9 as an INDIVIDUAL home enthusiast.

I am happy. :)

Afterwards I DID go back to look at the Avid "Qualified" systems...and did a LMAO.

Patrick

PS...your mileage will definitely vary if you want to run with the Big Dogs.

Default Re: Protools 9 working with Windows 7 64-bit

I just installed PT 9 on a Dell ES351 Desktop with 4GB RAM hooked to a Digi 002. I have installed the most recent drivers for 002. Once I load the PT it goes through the loading process with the plug ins and it hangs up once it starts to load the 002 and gives me a Crash Dump.

Can anyone help me. I am total stuck.

Thanks,

Hanif

Is this still the case?
I am on a Dell with 3.2GHz processor and 64bit windows 7

At the moment I'm seeing the PCs internal soundcard and ASIO4ALL appearing in my PT9 playback engine but not my Rane soundcard which runs in 64bit.

(For those interested) I am running Pro Tools 9.0.3 and am attempting to use my Rane Sixty-Eight DJ mixer as my sound card for the time being.
I have managed to get it working with Maschine 1.6.2 in 64bit mode by activating the 68 control panel and assigning the audio within Maschine preferences which took a while to get to appear but did eventually work.

I have also had no problems running the Rane with PT9 in Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 but I suspect this was all being done in 32bit.

I'm a little confused because my mac ( a 2009 core 2 duo model which died a couple weeks ago) seemed to indicate that it was capable of running some processes 64bit.

Anyhow for the present time I am only using my Dell tower and would be very happy if I could establish whether indeed Pro Tools 9 runs in 64bit mode OR if there is some tweak I should make for other soundcards to show in Playback Engine

Thanks everyone

Pro Tools is a 32bit application on both OSX and Windows. Therefore the maximum memory it can address is theoretically 4GB. On Windows this equates to about 2.8GB (on my system). Extra RAM is needed for OS things, but more than 4GB in total is more or less a waste of memory unless:

1) You plan to use a Rewire host for hosting virtual instruments
2) You plan to use Vienna Ensemble Pro for hosting virtual instruments (and soon 3rd party plugs as well)
3) You are planning for the time when PT is 64bit, and there are actually some 64bit RTAS plugs to load.
