Default How many interfaces without external clock?

My mix system cosisted of two Apogee AD8Kse's, one 888-20 (for AES) and an Adat-Bridge.

I used the first Apogee as master-clock, but sent this clock to the other boxes via and Aardvark distribution box.

I am about to hook-up my HD-5 system, which will consist of two 192 I-O's and a digital I-O. I may well also use one Apogee, as main converter and clock source (??) , for 44.1 sessions, but that will be determined after careful Digi vs Apogee tests.

There is also the possibility that I will use a third-party, 2-channel, 96K converter. That would be through AES, I guess.
-----------------------------

So, my question is: How many HD devices can I safely chain together?

Will I either need a seperate clock source, or a 96K ditribution box for my first 192 I-O?

Another question, as my HD hardware has not yet arrived:

In the HD interface descriptions, I see no mention of superclock. has Digi abandoned this, using "normal" wordclock instead?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Yes. According to Digidesign SuperClock at 192k is just too high a rate to put reliably down a cable, so they went all word clock for high sample rates. However, I believe superclock can still be transmitted and receieved by the 192 if you are using a "legacy" peripheral (like an 888) with your HD system.

i believe you can use superclock with 44.1 and 48k sessions, and can not use it with anything higher..
Interestingly you can't use SoundDesigner II Files with sessions above 48 either.
WAV is the standard

.wav is the standard? Are you kidding????

I'm not sure of the ramifications, but this seems very strange. Hmmm, maybe it's nuthin'.

Superclock is available from any of the HD Interfaces (192 I/O, 96 I/O, 192 Digital I/O) at 44.1k or 48k sample rates when the legacy port is enabled in the hardware setup window in Pro Tools.

You can also get Superclock from the Sync I/O but you'll need to change that setting from the face of the Sync I/O not via software.

I'm not sure I understand your question totally... You can clock as many as 8 HD interfaces on a single system using the Loop Sync connections on each I/O and Sync I/O. The Superclock output is a separate connecton that can be used while HD interfaces are using the Loop sync connections.

One of several benefits of Loop Sync is that you can clock your HD system from ANY digital input on ANY of your HD interfaces. You're not limited to channels 1&2 of your first interface like you are with a Pro Tools Mix system. This is selectable inside Pro Tools and can give you some clocking flexibility.

You can, and probably should, clock multiple digital devices, including Pro Tools, from a clock distribution device such as black burst generator, Aardsync box or some other multiple clock output device. Another possible solution may be the ZSync Systems (sp?) digital router if you really have a lot of digital gear to bring together.

As far as file formats; SDII, AIFF and .WAV are available at 44.1k and 48k. Only AIFF and .WAV are available at 88.2k, 96k, 176.4 and 192k sample rates.

Hope this helps.
